CFAO Kenya, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Unicharm Corporation are set to launch a sanitary pad manufacturing plant in Kenya to tackle Period Poverty.
The planned company, Sofy East Africa Limited, aims to produce affordable sanitary products for the Kenyan market, with the potential to expand across the region. This move comes at a time when access to menstrual hygiene products remains a major challenge for many women and girls in Kenya and across Africa.
Despite policy interventions such as tax exemptions and government distribution programmes, affordability and availability continue to limit access, particularly for low-income households.
For many girls, the lack of sanitary products means missing school during their periods, while others resort to unsafe alternatives. Beyond the immediate health risks, this reality contributes to lost educational opportunities and reinforces cycles of inequality.
Across the continent, period poverty is further compounded by stigma, limited awareness, and weak supply chains that make consistent access difficult.
Local manufacturing offers a practical and potentially transformative solution. By producing sanitary pads within Kenya, the joint venture could lower costs, stabilize supply, and expand distribution, especially to underserved communities.
It also presents an opportunity to create jobs and strengthen the country’s manufacturing sector, while leveraging existing regional networks to reach a wider market.
More broadly, the initiative highlights how private sector investment can play a role in addressing social challenges.
By combining industrial capacity with a clear social need, the partnership reflects a growing recognition that improving access to essential products like sanitary pads is not only a health issue, but also a matter of dignity, education, and economic participation.
If successful, the venture could contribute to reducing period poverty, keeping more girls in school, and enabling women to participate more fully in daily life.
In doing so, it underscores the importance of locally driven solutions in advancing both economic development and gender equality across Africa.CFAO Kenya, Toyota Tsusho, and Unicharm to Manufacture Sanitary Pads in Kenya, Tackling Period Poverty
