Car & General Kenya PLC has announced the appointment of Esther Koimett, a trailblazer in Kenya’s public service and economic management, to its Board of Directors.
Koimett’s addition is expected to bolster the company’s governance and strategic direction at a time of continued regional expansion.
With more than 35 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, Koimett is widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential public servants. She most recently served as Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications under the Ministry of ICT, Innovation, and Youth Affairs during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
Her extensive track record includes spearheading transformative projects such as the KenGen and Safaricom IPOs, milestones that broadened Kenya’s capital markets and enabled greater citizen participation in public investment.
In her various roles as Principal Secretary, Koimett provided visionary leadership and policy direction, advancing Kenya’s digital transformation and overseeing key state corporations including the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Postal Corporation of Kenya, Media Council of Kenya, Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), and Kenya Film Commission (KFC). Earlier, as Principal Secretary for Transport, she tackled major challenges in road construction and infrastructure project implementation, ensuring progress in Kenya’s critical transport sector.
Koimett’s career also includes senior roles as Investment Secretary and Director-General for Public Investments at the National Treasury, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Information, and CEO of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank.
Beyond her public sector achievements, Koimett brings deep expertise in boardroom leadership and corporate governance. She currently chairs the boards of M-Pesa Holdings Company Ltd and AAR Insurance Kenya Ltd and has served as a director on boards of top-tier institutions including Safaricom PLC, Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA from the University of Nairobi, an Advanced Management Programme (AMP) certificate from Strathmore University, and membership in the Institute of Investment and Financial Analysts (Kenya).
Esther Koimett is also the firstborn daughter of the late Nicholas Biwott, a prominent politician and businessman who played a significant role in shaping Kenya’s economic policies during the Moi era.
