The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has launched the Elevate HER Women in Leadership Network, a new initiative aimed to strengthen women’s leadership through mentorship, sponsorship, networking, and professional development.
The launch marks another significant step in advancing gender inclusion within Kenya’s financial sector by intentionally investing in women leaders and creating pathways for greater representation in decision-making roles.
Speaking during the launch, keynote speaker Muthoni Muiruri emphasized that leadership growth does not happen by chance but through deliberate investment in people, relationships, and personal development.
“Elevation is intentional. It doesn’t happen by chance but is built through the choices we make, the relationships we nurture, the value we create, and the character we develop every single day.”
She commended the Central Bank of Kenya’s leadership for prioritizing women’s leadership development, noting that investing in women creates long-term benefits that extend beyond the workplace.
“Thank you to the leadership team for inviting me to deliver the keynote. It was a true honour to be part of a moment dedicated to investing in women and creating pathways for more women to lead. The ripple effects of this investment will be felt for generations.”
Building a Strong Pipeline of Women Leaders
The Elevate HER Women in Leadership Network is designed to provide women across the bank with access to mentorship, sponsorship, leadership development opportunities, peer networking, and professional growth.
The initiative reflects a growing recognition among institutions that gender diversity in leadership strengthens organizational performance, fosters innovation, and contributes to more inclusive decision-making.
By creating a formal support structure, CBK aims to empower women employees to advance into leadership positions while building a culture where talent and potential can thrive.
A Growing Movement to Invest in Women
CBK joins a growing number of Kenyan institutions that are investing in women’s leadership and economic empowerment through structured programmes.
In 2021, Credit Bank PLC launched ElevateHer, a women-focused SME programme designed to support women entrepreneurs through business training, mentorship, networking opportunities, digital literacy, and improved access to finance.
Through the initiative, Credit Bank committed to supporting more than 10,000 women entrepreneurs via a digital learning platform, providing financial literacy training to 500 women-owned businesses, and offering intensive business advisory, mentorship, and market linkages to 100 high-potential entrepreneurs.
Unlike Credit Bank’s programme, which targets women-owned small and medium enterprises, CBK’s Elevate HER initiative focuses on nurturing women leaders within the institution by providing career development opportunities and strengthening leadership capacity.
Advancing Gender Equality Through Leadership
Women’s leadership networks have increasingly become important platforms for building confidence, expanding professional networks, increasing visibility, and preparing women for senior leadership positions.
By investing in mentorship, sponsorship, and leadership development, organizations can help close gender gaps in leadership while creating more inclusive workplaces that benefit employees, institutions, and society.
The launch of the Elevate HER Women in Leadership Network demonstrates CBK’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of women leaders and reinforcing the role of intentional leadership development in driving organizational excellence.
As Muthoni Muiruri reminded participants, “Unstoppable You” is more than a slogan,it is a call for women to embrace growth, create value, and lead with purpose.
