Cheryl Itemere Arunga was appointed Interim Managing Director of Endeavor Kenya, marking a significant milestone for one of Africa’s leading startup ecosystem builders.
Having spent the past year strengthening founder support and investor engagement, Arunga now takes on the responsibility of steering Endeavor Kenya’s strategic growth while advancing its mission of helping high-impact entrepreneurs scale their businesses.
Her appointment comes at a time when Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is attracting increasing global attention, with startups seeking not only capital but also the mentorship, networks, and strategic partnerships needed to build sustainable businesses. For Arunga, this new role is a continuation of a career dedicated to bridging those gaps and creating opportunities for founders to thrive.
A Leader Focused on Entrepreneur Success
Since joining Endeavor Kenya in 2024 as Head of Entrepreneur Experience, Arunga has played a central role in shaping how the organization supports entrepreneurs. She has led programmes designed to connect ambitious founders with investors, mentors, corporate partners, and industry experts, ensuring they have access to the resources needed to scale their ventures.
Her work has gone beyond portfolio management. By strengthening stakeholder relationships and building partnerships across the private sector and investment community, she has helped position Endeavor Kenya as a key player in nurturing high-growth businesses capable of transforming economies.
As Interim Managing Director, she will now oversee the organization’s operations, strategic partnerships, and long-term growth while continuing to expand opportunities for entrepreneurs across Kenya and the wider region.
Building Bridges Between Founders and Capital
Throughout her career, Arunga has focused on one critical challenge facing African startups: access to finance.
Before joining Endeavor Kenya, she worked at Pariti, where she helped develop a Venture Deals Marketplace that connected startups with investors across Africa. The experience deepened her understanding of the financing gaps confronting entrepreneurs and reinforced the importance of creating stronger investment networks for early-stage companies.
Earlier in her career, she worked at NCBA Bank, formerly NIC Bank, where she gained valuable experience in financial services. That background continues to shape her perspective on how financial systems can either enable or limit entrepreneurial growth.
Her expertise spans access to capital, fintech, digital entrepreneurship ecosystems, and the role of development finance institutions (DFIs) and blended finance in supporting innovation across Africa.
Building Ecosystems, Not Just Businesses
Rather than focusing solely on individual startups, Arunga advocates for strengthening the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem.
She believes founders succeed when they have access to interconnected networks of investors, mentors, policymakers, corporates, and fellow entrepreneurs. By fostering collaboration across these stakeholders, she aims to build ecosystems that allow innovative businesses to scale faster and create lasting economic impact.
Her approach reflects a growing recognition that Africa’s startup success depends not only on funding but also on creating environments where entrepreneurs can access knowledge, markets, and strategic partnerships.
Advancing Endeavor’s Mission
Founded on the belief that high-impact entrepreneurs have the power to transform economies, Endeavor operates in emerging and underserved markets around the world, supporting founders with mentorship, strategic advice, investor connections, and access to global networks.
The organization also manages Endeavor Catalyst, a co-investment fund that invests alongside leading venture capital firms in Endeavor entrepreneurs. Over the years, Endeavor Catalyst has become one of the world’s most active early-stage investors in startups that have gone on to achieve unicorn status outside the United States and China.
As Interim Managing Director, Arunga will continue advancing this mission by expanding Endeavor Kenya’s partnerships and strengthening support for founders with the potential to scale globally.
A Vision for Inclusive Growth
Arunga is particularly passionate about creating more intentional, inclusive, and connected entrepreneurship ecosystems across Africa.
Her work reflects the growing importance of ensuring that startups, regardless of their stage or geography, have equitable access to financing, mentorship, and opportunities for growth. By championing collaboration between investors, corporations, development partners, and entrepreneurs, she hopes to unlock the continent’s next generation of high-impact businesses.
Her appointment also highlights the increasing role women leaders are playing in shaping Africa’s innovation economy. As more women take leadership positions within investment firms, startup accelerators, and entrepreneurship organizations, they are helping redefine how support systems for founders are designed and delivered.
Leadership Beyond the Title
For Cheryl Itemere Arunga, leadership is about more than managing an organization. It is about building the systems that allow entrepreneurs to succeed, creating pathways to capital, and strengthening the networks that drive innovation.
Her journey, from financial services to venture ecosystem development and now leading Endeavor Kenya, illustrates how strategic leadership can create opportunities not only for individual founders but for entire entrepreneurial ecosystems.
As Africa’s innovation landscape continues to evolve, her leadership is expected to play an important role in helping entrepreneurs scale businesses that generate jobs, attract investment, and contribute to sustainable economic growth across the continent.
