GROOTS Kenya, an organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of grassroots women, recently organized a Blue Economy Entrepreneurship Bootcamp—a transformative initiative designed to empower women leading climate-smart, nature-based enterprises.
In collaboration with Mission Inclusion, IUCN ESARO, and OceanHub Africa, and with support from Global Affairs Canada, GROOTS Kenya is playing a central role in organizing and co-facilitating this dynamic bootcamp. They are mobilizing women-led groups, facilitating training sessions, and ensuring that women’s voices and lived experiences are at the forefront.
The bootcamp officially launched with inspiring remarks from Chief Officer Zamzam Ali, who praised the Reasea Project for its robust support of grassroots women. She reaffirmed Kilifi County’s commitment to uplifting women and youth through climate-resilient and sustainable livelihoods in the blue economy.
This intensive program brings together 16 women from 8 enterprise groups, each actively engaged in one of four promising value chains:
– Ecotourism
– Mangrove honey production
– Mariculture (crab fattening)
– Marine litter upcycling and management
Throughout the bootcamp, participants will gain hands-on skills in:
– Business ideation and development
– Strategic communication
– Planning and sustainability
– Preparing for investment opportunities
By the end of the training, these women will be better equipped not only to grow their businesses but also to lead the way in building a more inclusive and resilient blue economy.
