The Merck Foundation, has launched applications for the 2026 Africa Media Recognition Awards under its “More Than a Mother” campaign.
The annual awards celebrate journalists and media professionals who use storytelling as a powerful advocacy tool to address some of Africa’s most pressing social and health challenges. Through compelling reporting, documentaries, features, radio programs, photography, and digital storytelling, the initiative aims to spark dialogue and drive tangible social change across the continent.
Speaking on the launch, the Foundation emphasized the transformative role of creative industries in shaping attitudes and dismantling harmful norms.
“I strongly believe that media, fashion, and art should have a purpose beyond entertainment and looking good. They can raise awareness about critical issues such as diabetes prevention, breaking infertility stigma, ending child marriage, stopping FGM, combating gender-based violence, supporting girls’ education, and advancing women’s empowerment, among other social and health issues affecting our continent. Together, we can create a culture shift.”
Driving Impact Through Storytelling
The “More Than a Mother” campaign has long worked to break infertility stigma while also championing diabetes awareness and prevention, ending child marriage, stopping FGM, combating GBV, promoting girls’ education, and advancing women’s economic empowerment.
By recognizing excellence in journalism, the awards seek to encourage accurate, ethical, and impactful reporting that influences policy conversations and community attitudes.
The call is open to journalists from print, online, radio, television, and multimedia platforms across Africa who have produced work addressing the above themes. Entries are evaluated based on relevance, creativity, accuracy, and measurable impact in raising awareness or influencing behavior.
The awards are organized in collaboration with Africa’s First Ladies, reinforcing high-level commitment to advancing gender equality, public health, and social justice on the continent.
Since its inception, the awards have amplified the voices of journalists who go beyond headlines to highlight lived experiences, challenge stereotypes, and offer solutions-driven narratives.
“We are really looking forward to receiving your entries and seeing your amazing work,” the Foundation added.
