At 90, Professor Eddah Gachukia stands as one of Africa’s most influential education pioneers. From classrooms in Kenya to international education forums, Prof. Gachukia has dedicated more than six decades to one unwavering mission: ensuring that every girl has access to quality education and the opportunity to fulfil her potential.
As the founding Executive Director of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), co-founder of the Riara Group of Schools, scholar, legislator, and policy leader, her legacy continues to influence education systems across Africa.
From Teacher to National Education Leader
Born on July 13, 1936, Prof. Eddah Wacheke Gachukia began her professional journey as a teacher after earning a diploma in education from Makerere University.
She first taught at Thika High School before furthering her studies in language teaching at the University of Leeds. Her passion for educational excellence later saw her appointed Head of the General Methods Section at the Kenya Institute of Education, where she contributed to curriculum research and development.
Determined to deepen her expertise, she joined the University of Nairobi, earning both her Bachelor’s degree and later a PhD in Literature. She subsequently served as a Senior Lecturer and Chairperson of the Department of Literature, helping shape Kenya’s higher education landscape while mentoring countless students.
Her academic career reflected a firm belief that education should empower individuals to think critically, lead confidently, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Building Institutions That Continue to Shape Generations
Prof. Gachukia’s impact extends far beyond the lecture halls.
Together with her husband, Daniel K. Gachukia, she transformed a small kindergarten into what is today the Riara Group of Schools,one of Kenya’s most respected private education institutions.
The group has grown to include:
- Two kindergartens
- Two primary schools
- Riara Girls’ High School
- Riara University
As Academic Director, she has consistently championed innovation, academic excellence, leadership development, and values-based education.
Riara University, in particular, reflects her vision of nurturing innovators equipped to solve Africa’s challenges through quality higher education.
Championing Girls’ Education Across Africa
Perhaps Prof. Gachukia’s greatest continental contribution came through the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE).
Serving as the Founding Executive Director from 1993 to 1999, she helped establish one of Africa’s most influential organizations dedicated to improving girls’ access to education.
Under her leadership, FAWE expanded into dozens of African countries, influencing governments, development partners, and education stakeholders to remove barriers preventing girls from attending school.
The organisation championed initiatives addressing:

She has been a lifelong advocate for women’s empowerment, serving as a nominated Member of Parliament from 1974 to 1983, where she championed women’s interests in national leadership.
