Chief Justice Martha Koome has launched Distinguished Women Leaders: Profiles in Courage and Service Leadership in Nation Building, a landmark publication celebrating 69 remarkable Kenyan women whose courage, leadership, mentorship and service have helped shape the nation.
The book, spearheaded by the Chief Justice, shines a spotlight on women who have broken barriers and made lasting contributions in public service, business, education, the judiciary, governance and community development. More than a collection of biographies, it is a tribute to the women who have paved the way for future generations of leaders.
Speaking during the launch, Chief Justice Koome reflected on her own journey as Kenya’s first female Chief Justice, acknowledging that her success was built on the sacrifices and support of women who came before her.
“As Kenya’s first woman Chief Justice, I know that I did not arrive here alone. I stand on the shoulders of women who challenged convention, opened doors, extended a hand and dared to believe that women could lead at the highest levels,” she said.
She noted that the women featured in the publication have led in boardrooms, courtrooms, classrooms, businesses, public institutions and communities, strengthening the country’s institutions while advancing justice, education, economic growth and human dignity.
Celebrating Leadership That Opens Doors
A central message of the launch was that leadership is not only about personal achievement but also about creating opportunities for others.
Many of the women honoured were pioneers in their respective fields, often becoming the first,or the only,women in leadership positions. Rather than climbing alone, Chief Justice Koome said they chose to mentor others, creating pathways for more women to rise.
“The true measure of leadership is not simply how high we climb, but how many others rise because we chose to lift them,” she told the audience.
She described the publication as both a celebration of women’s achievements and a call to preserve the stories of women whose contributions have often gone undocumented despite transforming communities and institutions across Kenya.
A Tribute to Mentorship and Service
The event also celebrated the 70th birthday of Professor Leah Marangu, whose decades of scholarship, mentorship and leadership have inspired generations of women.
Professor Marangu’s journey served as a reminder that mentorship extends beyond offering advice. It involves opening doors, creating opportunities, sharing knowledge and ensuring that future generations have a stronger foundation to build upon.
Chief Justice Koome encouraged women leaders to continue mentoring others, stressing that every leadership journey is strengthened by those who choose to support and uplift others.
Preserving Women’s Stories for Future Generations
While the publication recognises 69 distinguished women, Chief Justice Koome acknowledged that countless other Kenyan women have transformed families, communities, organisations and the nation, often without public recognition.
She called for greater efforts to document women’s stories so that future generations understand the sacrifices, resilience and determination behind the achievements that have shaped Kenya.
“Our stories matter,” she said, adding that they are not acts of self-promotion but important records of history, leadership and service.
Holding the Ladder for the Next Generation
The launch concluded with a powerful call to action for today’s women leaders to continue building pathways for those who will follow.
“Our greatest responsibility is to ensure that no woman who becomes the first remains the only one,” Chief Justice Koome said.
Her message underscored the enduring importance of mentorship, solidarity and inclusive leadership in advancing gender equality and nation-building.
