Today, she serves as the Managing Director of Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL), where she has played a significant role in transforming the company into a more agile, competitive, and future-focused organisation.
When she took over leadership in 2018, Lina became the first woman and the first Kenyan local executive to head the company, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s corporate landscape.

Before joining KWAL, Lina built a distinguished career working with some of the world’s leading consumer brands, including British American Tobacco (BAT) and Unilever. Her roles exposed her to diverse African markets, where she developed expertise in commercial strategy, marketing, operations, and organisational transformation.
At British American Tobacco, she held senior regional leadership roles, including Head of Marketing for East and Central Africa, where she gained experience navigating complex markets, driving business growth, and managing large-scale commercial operations.
Her leadership approach has been shaped by her ability to balance strategic vision with execution. She has consistently focused on building strong teams, strengthening governance systems, and creating organisations that can adapt to changing business environments.
Transforming KWAL
At KWAL, Lina has overseen a period of significant transformation. Under her leadership, the company strengthened its commercial performance, improved operational efficiency, and invested in long-term growth.
One of the major milestones during her tenure was the development of KWAL’s modern manufacturing facility in Tatu City, an investment that positioned the company for future expansion and enhanced production capabilities.
Beyond business performance, Lina has focused on building an inclusive workplace culture where employees feel valued and supported.
The Inspiration Behind the Menstrual Leave Policy
One of Lina Githuka’s most notable workplace initiatives has been championing KWAL’s Feminine Leave Policy, which provides support for female employees experiencing menstrual and menopausal health challenges.
The policy was introduced from a recognition that women’s health needs are often overlooked in workplace conversations. For many women, menstrual health challenges can affect their comfort, productivity, and ability to fully participate at work, yet these issues are rarely openly discussed due to stigma.
Through the policy, Lina sought to create a more understanding and supportive work environment where women do not have to hide legitimate health experiences.
The initiative reflects her broader leadership philosophy: that organisations perform better when they create spaces where employees can bring their full selves to work.
Challenges Along the Way
Lina’s leadership journey has not been without challenges. Leading organisations in competitive industries requires navigating market disruptions, changing consumer behaviour, economic pressures, and organisational transitions.
Taking charge of a major company in a traditionally male-dominated corporate environment also meant breaking barriers and challenging perceptions about women’s leadership in senior executive positions.
However, Lina has consistently demonstrated that effective leadership is built on competence, resilience, integrity, and the ability to deliver results.
Recognition and Legacy
Her contribution to business leadership has earned her several recognitions, including being named Executive of the Year by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers and being featured among Kenya’s most influential women in the C-suite.
Beyond her executive role, Lina contributes to corporate governance as an Independent Non-Executive Director at the National Bank of Kenya and Population Services Kenya, offering strategic guidance and leadership experience.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Sociology from the University of Nairobi and has undertaken global executive leadership programmes focused on strategy, value creation, and organisational performance.
