KEWOPA has renewed its call for swift implementation of the two-thirds gender principle, urging Parliament to end years of constitutional delay.
In a High-Level Engagement convened by the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), KEWOPA joined lawmakers, gender advocates, and civil society representatives to deliberate on the implementation of Articles 27(8) and 81(b) of the Constitution , provisions that guarantee equitable gender representation in elective and appointive positions.
The meeting focused on Constitution Amendment Bills currently before both Houses of Parliament, reviewing proposals, timelines, and pathways to achieve the long-overdue balance in political representation.
Representing the KEWOPA Chairperson, Hon. Donya Dorice Aburi emphasized that the two-thirds gender rule is not a plea or political favor, but a constitutional right that must be upheld.
“The two-thirds requirement is not a request but a constitutional guarantee that has been delayed for fifteen years,” she stated. “Gender equality in representation is not a women’s agenda ,it is about constitutional fidelity, justice, and the strengthening of our democracy.”
The engagement called for harmonization of ongoing legislative efforts, mobilization of political will, and cross-party collaboration to secure the required votes for constitutional amendments.
Participants also highlighted the need for sustained public awareness, bipartisan support, and accountability mechanisms to ensure that Kenya finally meets the gender equity threshold outlined in its 2010 Constitution.
KEWOPA reiterated its unwavering resolve to continue organizing, engaging, and advocating for the full realization of the two-thirds gender principle.
“The time for postponement has passed,” KEWOPA declared, signaling a renewed momentum to turn constitutional promises into action.
The meeting marked a pivotal moment in Kenya’s ongoing struggle for gender parity in leadership , reinforcing that equal representation is central to democratic integrity and national development.
