On August 7, 2025, an AMREF air ambulance crashed into Mwihoko, Kiambu County, shortly after departing Wilson Airport for a medical mission to Hargeisa.
Among the six individuals who lost their lives, was Nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula, a dedicated emergency flight nurse whose compassion and professionalism left an indelible mark on Kenya’s healthcare landscape.
Nurse Rispah’s career journey was defined by her unwavering commitment to service and her pioneering spirit in the specialized field of aviation medicine.
For nearly five years with AMREF Flying Doctors, Jane was a vital member of the emergency response team, regularly delivering life-saving care under the most demanding and high-stress circumstances.
Colleagues recall her remarkable steadiness under pressure and her gentle touch, even in the midst of airborne emergencies where every second counted.
Her brother, Daniel Omusula, offered a glimpse into Jane’s vibrant life beyond her scrubs. He described her as someone who lived with zeal, passionate about golf, travel, and cherishing moments with family and friends.
“She was the most dedicated person I have ever seen… maybe she knew this life was just something to pass,” he reflected. Daniel noted Jane’s unique role in the family as the only doctor, always ready to help, whether by offering medical advice or urging loved ones to seek care at Kenyatta Hospital.
On the day of the crash, Jane was undertaking what those around her say was among her most selfless missions, flying into harm’s way in service of others in critical need. Her legacy is not only that of a healer, but of a healthcare hero who repeatedly chose risk and uncertainty to bring hope and healing to the desperately ill.
AMREF’s CEO, Stephen Gitau, paid tribute to Jane and her colleagues, describing them as “heroes… who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to humanity.”
Beyond her technical skill and bravery, Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula broke barriers in a field historically dominated by men. Her ascent within the world of emergency aviation medicine stands as an inspiration to women across Africa, particularly those pursuing leadership roles in STEM and healthcare. Her personal story, as shared by her family, is one of deep professional commitment and a passion for life.
Jane’s final mission was emblematic of her profound empathy and sense of duty, not seeking glory, but answering the highest call of humanity, even when faced with mortal danger.
