Three of Africa’s youngest female ministers are demonstrating that age is no barrier to leadership, using their platforms to champion girls’ education, gender equality, and youth empowerment across the continent.
During the CIEFFA Pan-African Conference on Girls’ and Women’s Education in Burundi, Botswana’s Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Lesego Chombo, was joined by two fellow young ministers,Hon. Emma Theofelus, Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology, and Hon. Dr. Lakisa Mercy Faith, Uganda’s Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development (Youth and Children Affairs).
The gathering brought together policymakers, education advocates, and development partners committed to expanding access to quality education for girls while strengthening opportunities for young women to lead.
Lesego Chombo: From Beauty Queen to Cabinet Minister
At just 30 years old, Lesego Chombo has become one of Africa’s most inspiring young leaders. A corporate lawyer, philanthropist, former Miss Botswana, and Miss World Africa 2024, she made history after being appointed Botswana’s youngest cabinet minister by President Duma Boko.
As Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Chombo has focused on youth employment, gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and the fight against gender-based violence. Through initiatives such as the EntreprenHER programme and her advocacy for gender-responsive budgeting, she continues to push for policies that create greater opportunities for women and girls.

Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, has become one of the continent’s most recognizable young political leaders.

Dr. Lakisa Mercy Faith: Championing Uganda’s Youth and Children
Representing Uganda, Hon. Dr. Lakisa Mercy Faith serves as Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development responsible for Youth and Children Affairs.
Her work focuses on improving the lives of young people through policies that strengthen child protection, youth empowerment, education, and social development. She has been an advocate for creating opportunities that allow young people, especially girls, to reach their full potential.
