From technology and entrepreneurship to reproductive justice advocacy, Namibian changemaker Ndiilokelwa Nthengwe is proving that African women can transform bold ideas into lasting social impact.
When Forbes Africa unveiled its prestigious Under 30 list, one of the standout names was Ndiilokelwa Nthengwe,an award-winning author, activist, tech entrepreneur, and social innovator whose work is reshaping conversations around reproductive justice and youth empowerment across Southern Africa.
The recognition celebrates years of determined advocacy, innovative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that women, girls, and marginalized communities have access to reproductive healthcare and justice.
From Technology to Purpose-Driven Leadership
Nthengwe’s career did not begin in public health.
After studying Business Innovation and Computer Technology, she initially envisioned building technology solutions to address unemployment and expand opportunities for young Africans. However, reading The Moment of Lift by Melinda French Gates inspired a profound shift in her life’s mission.
Rather than pursuing technology alone, she combined innovation with social impact, redirecting her skills toward reproductive justice,a decision that would eventually define her career.
Leading One of Namibia’s Most Influential Advocacy Movements
In 2020, Nthengwe emerged as one of the driving forces behind Namibia’s abortion law reform movement.
She helped mobilize a grassroots petition that attracted more than 60,000 signatures, bringing national attention to reproductive rights and pushing Parliament to engage in discussions that had remained largely dormant for decades.
Recognizing the need for sustained advocacy, she co-founded the Voices for Choices and Rights Coalition (VCRC) Health and Research Institute, transforming a citizen-led campaign into a respected organization producing research, influencing public policy, and delivering healthcare services.
Under her leadership, VCRC made its first formal policy submission to Parliament in 2021, marking a historic milestone in Namibia’s reproductive justice movement.
Transforming Healthcare Beyond Advocacy
Nthengwe believes meaningful advocacy must extend beyond protests and policy discussions.
In 2022, VCRC established Namibia’s first reproductive justice clinic, providing inclusive reproductive healthcare, HIV screening, contraceptive services, education, and referrals for underserved communities.
The organization also expanded its reach by taking healthcare services directly to communities through outreach programs, entertainment events, and youth-centered initiatives.
Her vision is simple yet ambitious: healthcare should be accessible, inclusive, and rooted in dignity for every individual.
Innovation Through Digital Storytelling
Recognizing the growing influence of digital media, Nthengwe also established a digital content studio dedicated to educating young Africans on reproductive health, gender equality, constitutional rights, and other social issues.
Through podcasts, interviews, documentaries, and creative storytelling, she is helping reshape public conversations while ensuring critical information reaches younger audiences in engaging and accessible ways.
The initiative reflects her belief that technology and storytelling can become powerful tools for social change.
International Recognition and Growing Influence
Nthengwe’s impact extends far beyond Namibia.
She is a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, a Master’s candidate at Wits Business School, a Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Fellow in the United States, an AFDA graduate, and the author of three books.
In 2025, VCRC received a transformative NAD 1 million grant from the European Union, strengthening the organization’s ability to expand reproductive healthcare and policy advocacy across Namibia.
Her inclusion in the Forbes Africa Under 30 list further cements her place among Africa’s emerging leaders using innovation to solve complex social challenges.
Lessons for African Women
Nthengwe’s journey offers valuable lessons for women across Africa.
She demonstrates that career paths do not have to remain fixed. Skills gained in technology, business, or the creative industries can become powerful tools for solving social challenges.
Her story also highlights the importance of courage in addressing difficult conversations, investing in evidence-based advocacy, and building institutions that outlive individual movements.
Perhaps her most powerful message is that young Africans already possess the agency to create change.
Rather than waiting for permission, she encourages young people to recognize their potential, use their voices, and transform challenges into opportunities for lasting impact.
Inspiring Africa’s Next Generation of Women Leaders
As Africa continues producing women who are redefining leadership, Ndiilokelwa Nthengwe represents a new generation that refuses to separate innovation from impact.
Her journey, from aspiring entrepreneur to internationally recognized activist and Forbes Africa Under 30 honoree, shows that purpose-driven leadership can influence policy, improve lives, and inspire an entire continent.
For African women seeking to build careers that create meaningful change, her story serves as a reminder that one bold decision can spark a movement capable of transforming generations.
