Kenyan doctor and researcher Dr Joan Ruguru Kimani has received international recognition after winning the American Thoracic Society (ATS) Underrepresented Trainee Development Scholarship Award.
The prestigious scholarship, presented during the American Thoracic Society’s 2026 Conference in the United States, recognizes exceptional early-career medical professionals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing healthcare research, improving patient outcomes, and addressing critical health challenges.
Dr Joan Ruguru Kimani received the award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to child health and her efforts to prevent and combat respiratory diseases among children.
Her achievement comes as she prepares to begin her residency training as a first-year pediatric resident at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Her research focuses on pediatric respiratory diseases and the development of innovative global health solutions aimed at improving children’s health outcomes worldwide.
