Sonia John is the Founder and CEO of Photomasters Kenya, a cloud-based photography booking platform that is redefining how Kenyans access professional photography services for events.
Launched in 2016, Photomasters Kenya was created to solve a real market gap. Before its entry, finding a reliable photographer often depended on word-of-mouth referrals or time-consuming online searches. Sonia recognised the need for a centralised, trusted platform where customers could easily connect with vetted photographers. Today, Photomasters operates as an online marketplace, offering users flexible packages such as Quick Shoot, Standard Shoot, and Full-Day coverage, while allowing them to schedule and pay for services seamlessly.
Sonia’s entrepreneurial journey gained significant momentum when she became a 2017 alumna of the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme. Reflecting on her experience, she highlights mentorship as one of the most transformative aspects of the programme. Through guidance from her mentor and access to a broader entrepreneurial network, she was able to navigate complex business decisions, refine her strategy, and better understand the realities of scaling a startup.
Beyond mentorship, the exposure and networking opportunities proved invaluable. At the 2019 TEF Forum, Sonia connected with an investor who believed strongly in her vision. This encounter led to Photomasters Kenya securing funding to expand beyond its home market into Uganda—marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth journey and positioning it as a regional player in East Africa’s digital marketplace space.
Sonia’s background also reflects a strong commitment to leadership and growth. As a fellow of the Young African Leadership Initiative in 2016, she has consistently demonstrated a passion for innovation and youth empowerment.
Her work with Photomasters goes beyond business—it is about creating opportunities for photographers, standardising service quality, and leveraging technology to bring efficiency and trust into the creative industry.
At its core, Photomasters Kenya is more than a booking platform. It is a disruptive solution that is streamlining how consumers access photography services while empowering local creatives with visibility and income opportunities. By carefully vetting photographers through a structured application process and portfolio review, the platform ensures quality and professionalism, building confidence among users.
Sonia John’s journey underscores the importance of mentorship, networks, and resilience in entrepreneurship. From identifying a gap in the market to building a scalable tech-enabled solution and expanding across borders, she represents a new generation of African women entrepreneurs who are leveraging innovation to solve everyday challenges.
Her story is not just about business success—it is about vision, persistence, and the power of believing in an idea strong enough to change an entire industry.
