Dr Elizabeth Amakove Wala: From Healthcare Leadership to Entrepreneurship and Political Ambitions in Kenya
A year ago, Dr Elizabeth Amakove Wala, a renowned medical doctor and healthcare leader in Kenya, faced a critical career turning point. With health sector consultancies slowing and after stepping away from her formal job to pursue new ventures, the single mother of four asked herself: “How do I keep my family going?” Life, after all, doesn’t pause for bills or responsibilities.
Some friendships faded, calls went unanswered, and adjustments were necessary. But Amakove isn’t one to be defeated by challenges. She asked a simple yet profound question: “What problem do I face that others around me also face?” The answer was surprisingly ordinary—finding high-quality deep-fried fish nearby. Most people had to travel far for it, sparking a business idea.
With determination, she launched Koven Kafe, starting from a tiny stall. Sceptics questioned why a medical doctor would be frying fish in a small kibanda, but in its first month, the business covered her rent in a prime neighbourhood. Fast forward one year, and Koven Kafe has grown into three thriving branches, employing 21 people and operating from permanent, larger premises.
Through this journey, Dr Amakove realised a powerful truth: small businesses are transformative. They create dignity, jobs, and opportunities for entire families. Her experience inspired the #MamaSystems initiative, a project designed to build systems that support everyday entrepreneurs—especially women—so they can work, earn, and thrive with dignity.
Beyond entrepreneurship, Dr Amakove Wala is a distinguished healthcare leader with over 20 years of experience. She has served as CEO of Beyond the Stethoscope since 2018, empowering medical professionals through capacity-building programs, strategic partnerships, and impactful events. Her expertise spans Health Systems Strengthening, Universal Health Coverage, global health policy, and healthcare innovation. She has advised national governments, development partners, and professional associations across Africa, shaping policy, mobilising resources, and delivering sustainable impact.
Her career highlights include:
- Regional Manager, Medical Services & Outreach Programmes at AMREF (2016)
- Former CEO, Kenya Medical Association
- Top 40 Under 40 finalist, 2016
- Chairperson of an association supporting families with multiples, comprising over 700 families
- Founder of a nanny bureau, cycling enthusiast, mentor, and public speaker
Adding a new chapter to her leadership journey, Dr Amakove Wala has announced her candidacy for the Vihiga Women Representative seat, aiming to extend her impact from healthcare and entrepreneurship to political leadership, advocating for women, families, and community development.
Dr Amakove’s story is a testament to resilience, innovation, and leadership. From navigating the challenges of single parenthood to growing a thriving business and now pursuing political office, she exemplifies how determination and creativity can transform both personal and community opportunities.
