Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has signed a deal with Charlene Ruto’s SMASCHS Foundation to boost and expand beekeeping initiatives across the county.
The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during the National World Food Day celebrations in Kendu Bay, highlights a shared commitment to promoting sustainable food systems and empowering local farmers.
Governor Wanga emphasized that the collaboration aims to transform beekeeping into a viable income-generating activity for rural residents, especially youth and women, by providing technical support, specialized training, and access to modern equipment. “This partnership will empower our farmers, create employment opportunities, and promote climate-smart agriculture that aligns with our county’s development priorities,” she stated. The county is set to benefit from enhanced honey production, value addition, and expanded market access for apiculture products.
Charlene Ruto, Founder and Director of SMASCHS, commended Homa Bay’s focus on youth-driven innovation and climate action. She underscored the environmental benefits of sustainable beekeeping, noting its role in pollination and ecosystem restoration. “Beekeeping is a low-cost, high-impact venture that can transform rural economies if given the right support. Our goal is to work hand in hand with counties like Homa Bay to drive community-based solutions that improve food security and climate resilience,” said Ms. Ruto.
The MoU supports Governor Wanga’s broader economic transformation plan, which prioritizes agricultural productivity and climate adaptation. With its favorable climate and abundant floral resources, Homa Bay is well positioned to become a leading honey producer in the Nyanza region.
This partnership not only marks a significant step toward making agribusiness more sustainable but also underscores the power of public-private collaboration in advancing Kenya’s food security and climate action goals. By focusing on apiculture, the county is setting a precedent for innovative, inclusive, and environmentally friendly rural development.
